How to Deliver Speeches
By Irshad Mahmood – Director, Siraat-al-Mustaqeem Dawah Centre
Delivering
Speech is an art which needs Effective Communication. Generally people
think that those who have louder and clear voice and have studied from
Madarsas etc. are Scholars/Alims and only those need to be promoted,
but they forget that Prophet Muhammad (Peace-Be-Upon-Him) was
illiterate and no human taught him, he didn’t attend any
Madarsas/Schools etc. It is Allah who opens the heart of people to
understand and follow His Guidance in sprit. Yes being a human there
might be few errors and mistakes, since no human is free from
errors/sins. Remember: Allah opens hearts of those who sincerely devotes himself/herself towards Allah and takes Guidance from His Only Protected Book the Quraan, true book of Guidance for mankind.Effective
communication is important for living systems for power, control and
survival. Without effective communication societies or systems cannot
organize themselves or perform desired functions.Living
systems or societies are information processing units and information
can only be communicated effectively if the communication channels are
free from any disturbance or noise. As an example: For transactions in banks, they need error free transactions, “NOT A SINGLE MISTAKE”.True
Contents, Style, Audience, Repeating & Reminding and Listening
Attentively are the Key ingredients for Effective Communication.
Speakers must restrict themselves to the Topic assigned as well as they
must know audience very well.Allah told to listen to the Quraan with full attention is a part of Effective Communication, (Ref: Al_Quraan_007.204).Allah told to mind your language as well, (Ref: Al_Quraan_004.148, 010.015 - 016).Keep in mind YELLING means FORCING but there is no compulsion is Religion,
(Ref: Al-Quraan_002:256). Prophet Muhammad (Peace-Be-Upon-Him) was very
soft spoken and respecting his audience. Yelling creates negative
effects and people runaway because of Yelling. Sometimes kids run away
from their parents too due to Yelling. Because of Yelling kids become
aggressive, loose self-confidence and in extreme cases it might damage
their brains because of that they are unable to play and learn well.Always
make Duaa that “If I am wrong, May Allah Correct me, if you are Wrong,
May Allah correct you, and if we both are wrong, May Allah correct both
of us, AMEEN.”Islaam educates to respect all without any discrimination. You must listen to all BUT follow the truth according to the Quraan, true book of guidance for the mankind. We
need to take Guidance from the Quraan. Allah commanded us to speak with
polite/respectful, read the Quraan neither very loud nor very low
rather in moderate voice.Musa
(Peace Be Upon Him) was a visible Prophet/Messenger while Khizr (Peace
Be Upon Him) was an invisible prophet; similarly after Rasool Allah
(Peace Be Upon Him), we have visible and invisible Auliyas (Scholars)
and you must obey them as long as they follow the Quraan. Please do not
underestimate this person (Auliya/Scholar) if he/she is among your
relatives or friends by behaving as if Home Grown Chicken is the same
as Lentil (Chick Peas/ Daal) (GHAR KEE MURGHEE DAAL BRAABER), because
Allah may question you on this matter. You must have a positive
attitude for all specially on religious issue. It
was revealed to Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) that there is a man
who has vast knowledge than him, Moses (Peace Be Upon Him) prayed to
Allah about his willing to meet the person (Hazrat Khizr Peace Be Upon
Him), then he was ordered to make a journey, take a cooked fish and you
will meet him (Hazrat Khizr Peace Be Upon Him) at the place where this
fish will missing. Musa (Peace Be Upon Him) started his journey to
search for Hazrat Khizr (Peace Be Upon Him) and on how he met him and
what are the reasons behind the three acts done by Khizr (Peace Be Upon
Him), please read this interesting and meaningful story, (Taken from
Al_Quraan_018:060-082).When Allah sent Prophet Musa (Peace-Be-Upon-Him) towards Pharaoh, He commanded him to speak to him politely/respectfully, (Ref: Al_Quraan-020:009-048).Allah mentioned in the Quraan that Prophet Muhammad (Peace-Be-Upon-Him) was soft spoken/Polite/ Respectful otherwise people could have runaway, (Ref: Al_Quraan-003:159).When
there was time of idolatry Allah sent Prophet Ibrahim
(Peace-Be-Upon-Him) to guide people and bring back towards Allah
instead of idols. When there was time for magic Allah sent Prophet Musa
(Peace-Be-Upon-Him) to break their spells to call them towards Allah
and leave behind all their magic. Later Allah sent Prophet Jesus
(Peace-Be-Upon-Him) to show some of His signs to people so that they
can return towards to Allah.Similarly
Allah sent Prophet Muhammad (Peace-Be-Upon-Him) with miracle of
miracles the Quraan (the living miracle) to guide people and bring back
towards Allah.Nowadays
it is time of modern science/technology of Global World and people need
to look for those Scholars/Auliyas who have Global Thinking and their
hearts are linked towards Allah by taking Guidance from the Quraan. Those who don’t have Global Vision cannot help you guide in today’s time while still thinking like living in 7th century. Look for those whose thinking is for 21st century and beyond to lead you to get success in this world as well as in the hereafter.Invite
(all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and
argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious, (Ref:
Al_Quraan_016.125).No matter what, it is duty on each and every Muslims to speak politely/respectfully and with wisdom. After
Prophet Muhammad (Peace-Be-Upon-Him), who was the Last and Final
Prophet/Messenger, Allah put the responsibilities on whole Ummah, some
for Full Time Dawah and the rest for Part Time Dawah:You
are the best of peoples (doing Part Time Dawah), evolved for mankind,
enjoining (order) what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and
believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book had faith, it was
best for them: among them are some who have faith, but most of them are
perverted transgressors, (Al_Quraan_003.110).And
from among you there should be a party (doing Full Time Dawah like
Scholars, Ulemaas, Auliyas) who invite to good and enjoin what is right
and forbid the wrong, and these it is that shall be successful,
(Al_Quraan_003.104).Duties of Auliyaas and Global Auliyaas (Mujaddids) of Present Time:And
from among you there should be a party (of Auliyaas and Global
Auliyaas/Mujaddids) who invite to good and enjoin what is right and
forbid the wrong, and these it is that shall be successful,
(Al_Quraan_003.104).Duties of rest of Muslim Ummah of Present Time:Allah
sent prophets and messengers all around the world and at all ages till
the last Prophet Muhammad (Peace-Be-Upon-Him). Similarly Auliyaas and
Global Ayliyaas are all around the world and around in all eras, after
Rasool Allah (Peace-Be-Upon-Him). Prophet Nooh (Peace-Be-Upon-Him) was
preaching for around 950 years but only a few people were listening to
him, so Allah saved only those who were following Prophet Nooh
(Peace-Be-Upon-Him). Similarly in the past and present time Auliyaas
and Global Auliyaas are calling people towards Allah and will be in
future as well Inshaa Allah, and it
is totally up to the people to listen and follow Auliyaas and Global
Auliyaas (Mujaddids) of the Present Time on their call to Allah,
otherwise severe punishment may catch them as well. And
withhold yourself with those who call on their Lord morning and evening
desiring His goodwill, and let not your eyes pass from them (always yes sir, till Auliyaas and Global Auliyaas (Mujaddids) follow the Quraan),
desiring the beauties of this world's life; and do not follow him whose
heart We have made unmindful to Our remembrance (Quraanic Directive),
and he follows his low desires and his case is one in which due bounds
are exceeded, (Al_Quraan_018.028).Media MUST Play an Active Role on Promoting Right AULIYAS, if they are truly according to the Quraan.
Prophet Muhammad (Peace-Be-Upon-Him) was walking/talking Quraan, (Ref. Al_Quraan_005.067, 033.021, 034.028).
